urbansketchers

Urban sketchers Bremen

The concept of urban sketchers was developed by the Spanish artist Gabriel Campanario now living in Seattle. Urban sketchers accepts only on site drawing, nothing from postcards or photos.
It is a matter of exercise and discipline and I must admit it is also fun sitting somewhere and just sketch the whole scenery.

The urban sketchers network is growing and has now over 1500 members.
For Bremen I would appreciate it very much if we could build up our Bremen group. If you are interested please visit Urban Sketchers Bremen at flickr.com.

Here are some of the sketches I did. They are published on my flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/manfredschloesser/
I am using a moleskine book and a simple pen. Sometimes I add some color from my mini water color set. And sometimes I am experimenting with my new livescribe pen.

La Gomera La_Playa_2010
This woman from the Netherlands wore such an impressive hat and matching sunglasses, I had to sketch her.
During our trip to the Canary island of La Gomera in October and November 2010 I had the time do fill my sketch book.

Stralsund Marina 2010 and Ozeaneum
The city of Stralsund is located at the Strelasund opposite of the Ruegen island and was a member of the Hanse. The modern building is the Ozeaneum, an exhibition center. www.ozeaneum.de/
We made trip around Ruegen with a sailing boat. This was the best idea for the hot season....

The people at the sunny beach of Binz like to relax. We were on a sailing trip around this lovely island.

Bremen Schlachte 2010
This part of Bremen was the old port of Bremen. Medieval Hanse merchants had here their storage. The twin towers of the Bremen Dom on the right hand side are dominating the city center. I did this sketch from the top level of the Beluga shipping tower located on the Weser island. The bar offers a fantastic view. I think the prices in the restaurant "Outer Roads" are only for people with a huge banking account and booking has to be three weeks in advance.

Emma am See: Dining in the Buergerpark
28 May 2010: This came as a real surprise. This wonderful building was for years quite a boring place to drink coffee and have some cakes in an old interior. Now the new owners renovated this jewel. Located in the Bremen Buergerpark it is the latest attraction, a combination of Bauhaus architecure and modern cuisine.

March 2010 Trip to Valencia and Alicante

Beach houses in Vilajoyosa, Spain
Our visit in Spain in Spring 2010. We took the train from Altea to Benidorm and travelled further on to Vilajoyosa or Villa Joyosa. The old beach front houses are painted in different colors and they have rebuilt the promenade. Very nice town definitely worth a visit.

Altea yacht harbor. On our trip to Spain in March 2010 we visited Altea, Valencia and other places. It was too cold.
Benidorm, Spain, the curse of the 80sBenidorm: This is a real suprise, rather a shock. This city was built in the 70s and 80s.

8 August 2009 The new harbor in Bremerhaven has developed quite a lot
.

absersiel

8 August 2009 Abser Siel is a very tiny little harbor, more a mud hole on the left bank of the river Weser. At low tide the boats literally sink into the mud.

Bremen_Findorff_Admirals

4 August 2009Findorff is a small quarter in Bremen near to the Buergerpark. In the 19th century workers transported the turf from the wetland via canals to this part of the town. Nowadays on the corner of Admiral and Hemmstrasse you can enjoy the best Italian ice cream north of Italy.

europahafens

4 August 2009The Europahafen is becoming a new attraction. The city of Bremen is playing with a novel idea for this area. Restaurants, offices, and appartements in the former harbor are now being built.

Weser_Elsfleth_Harbor_2009s

1 August 2009The small harbor of Elsfleth is on the left bank of the river Weser north of Bremen. It is behind a watergate. Depending on draft of your boat you better do not enter at low tide. The sill of the lock is unvisible and made of strong steel. Our own small sailing boat is an H Boat with a draft of 1,30 Meter.

parkhotel_2009s

31 July 2009The most exclusive hotel in Bremen is in the Buergerpark (Citizens´Park).. I think they have 5 stars.

zur_schleuse_1s

1 July 2009After a hot day the people are enjoying an evening on the banks of the river Wuemme, a small river meandering through the meadows north of Bremen. Sitting next to us was an extended family with grandfather, grandmother, aunt, mother and little son (4 years?). The restaurant Zur Schleuse with its typical Reet roof (thatched roof) is named after the watergate (Schleuse). It is specialised on local food like Knipp which is basically a poor man´s meal de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knipp_(Speise). But now it became quite hip and expensive. We used our canoe to go downstream with the tide, had our meal and paddled back with the tide coming in.

rolandmuehles

23 June 2009The Rolandmühle in Bremen is one of the old brick buildings in the Timber Harbor (Holzhafen) of Bremen. It was one of these perfect evenings. The sun was setting and we were drinking our Weizenbier watching the scenery. On 6 February 1979 the Roland Mill was on fire after an explosion due to the ignition of dust of flour.
